Event: The 3rd SESAME – LinkSCEEM Summer School

Description of Open Day: The 3rd SESAME-LinkSCEEM Summer School took place at SESAME site during the period form 8 - 10 September, 2013. The school was organized and funded by the LinkSCEEM-2 FP7 project in collaboration with Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME), European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and University of Jordan (JU). The School was attended by more than 25 qualified applicants where it was aiming to motivate the scientists in the Middle-East region with topics related to High Performance Computing (HPC) and its applications in the field of Synchrotron Radiation (SR).
The school was held for three days; during the first day participants received general introduction about HPC and its applications in the Synchrotron Radiation fields. In the second day the participants were divided into two groups based on their interest to participate in one of the following two parallel training sessions:
- Density Functional Theory (DFT): Quantum Espresso and ABINIT.
- HPC for Bioinformatics: Tomography data collection & processing and XANES and EXAFS data analysis.
During the third day all the participants visited SESAME site in Allan. Finally, the participants were asked to fill out a “Evaluation and Feedback” form. Based on their evaluation and feedback we could find that the 3rd School was very helpful and fruitful.
