The work on the implementation phase of the LinkSCEEM project was officially kicked-off at the LinkSCEEM-2 meeting held at the Cyprus Institute, in Nicosia, Cyprus on October 25, 2010. The European Commission is providing 2.5 million of funding for the LinkSCEEM-2 project over the next four years. The project, coordinated by CaSToRC, aims at the establishment of a High Performance Computing (HPC) eco-system in the Eastern Mediterranean region
by interlinking and coordinating regional compute, storage and visualization resources to form an integrated e-infrastructure. During the meeting, 26 participants from the 11 LinkSCEEM-2 partner institutions contributed to the development of the detailed plan and distribution of work in the various activities of the project.The project coordinator, Professor Constantia Alexandrou gave a warm welcome to the participants, and opened the discussion by presenting a detailed project overview emphasizing project goals, challenges and opportunities for future infrastructure and research community enlargement.
The project management procedures and systems were discussed followed by an overview of the work packages (activities) comprising LinkSCEEM-2. Project participants then held several meetings during which the detailed work plan for the next stages of the project was developed. The Steering Committee of the project convened at the end of the meeting to discuss conclusions, action items and approve decisions.
Immediately following the project’s kick-off meeting, the formal launch of the LinkSCEEM-2 activities took place at the Cyprus Institute in the presence of government officials, and members of academic and research institutions. Mrs Erato Kozakou Markoulli, the Minister of Communications and Works inaugurated the event, which also included welcoming speeches by Prof. Costas Papanicolas, President of the Cyprus Institute, and Prof. Constantia Alexandrou, Interim Director of CaSToRC. Mr Rudolf Dimper, Head of Computing Services at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, in France gave a short lecture entitled 'Electrons, photons and our understanding of the world around us'.
